Ismail Mustaming - Pioneer of the Fisherman Network Environment (JALA), Tanjung Batu, Berau, East Kalimantan

Mr. Ismail Mustaming, a local fisherman from East Kalimantan, is a committed advocate for sustainable fishing practices. He is strongly opposed to the use of explosives, poisons, and other damaging fishing methods that inflict serious harm on our seas. Ismail is the founder of the Fishermen's Network - JALA (Jaringan Nelayan), which was set up in 2010.

The inception of JALA was prompted by the frequent offers of unsustainably caught fish, which the members could not accept out of respect for Indonesian law. Ismail was prompted to take action, motivated by his profound concern for the environment. Over 7-8 years, YKAN has contributed insights and knowledge regarding environmentally friendly fishing practices. Through ongoing education, the community has warmly embraced more sustainable fishing methods.
