Countries worldwide declared their commitments to mitigate climate change
by keeping the average increase of the global temperature below 2o Celsius under the Paris Agreement 2015. One of the innovations to achieve that target is Natural Climate Solution (NCS).
NCS is a series of mitigation efforts based on natural resources that cover the protection of forest and wetlands, forest management improvement, and forest, peatland, and mangrove ecosystem restoration.
NCS in Indonesia covers six strategies: reforestation, degraded peatlands rewetting, peatland damages prevention, mangrove restoration, mangrove damage prevention, and sustainable forest management.
Based on a study by YKAN and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in April 2021, the emission reduction potential from NCS in Indonesia is 1.4 GtCO2e/year. There are potentially 3% contributions from the mangrove ecosystem, 30% contributions from the forestry sectors, and 67% contributions from the peatlands.
