Improving Indonesia's Fisheries Through Traceable Data

To foster a more sustainable fishing sector, fishers and the industry should avoid catching species with a declining population. To support this, YKAN’s CODRS provides detailed tracking data that helps inform important decisions.

CODRS is an integrated data collection system that uses onboard photographs and vessel tracking to document each catch. Designed for use by both government and fishing communities, it fills critical gaps in stock data and has already recorded more than 8.1 million fish specimens from 44,000 landings across Indonesia’s waters.

CODRS data allows fisheries managers and researchers to focus on strategy, as it already captures the dominant and most vulnerable species in each region. It also ensures that Indonesia has robust data on marine resources and fishing activity, which is vital to safeguarding the long-term health of the nation’s seas.

YKAN works with fishers to gather CODRS data through its Fisher Advocates program. Since 2015, the program has invited fishing communities to help document the health of Indonesia’s fish stocks. Knowing the status of these stocks is essential, as it offers valuable insights into regional fish populations and helps inform better, data-driven policy decisions.

Participation in the Fisher Advocates program is voluntary. It enables fishers to record their catch, vessel location, and any protected species encountered at sea. YKAN staff provide ongoing support, assisting fishers in reviewing their data while ensuring that all information remains confidential.

Apart from playing an active role in conserving Indonesia’s fish stocks, participating fishers also gain the opportunity to learn the scientific names of their catch, receive help with location tracking if needed, and earn fair compensation for their efforts.

I like the CODRS data collection because I can learn about the different types of fish in the sea. I also feel comfortable at sea because I always carry and activate a spot trace (GPS Tracker), so my whereabouts can be monitored.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has used CODRS data to support the development of national fisheries management policies. At the same time, fishing companies rely on CODRS data to report transparently on how fish are caught across Indonesia, helping to ensure the traceability of sustainable seafood products.
