Building Coastal Resilience in Sabu Raijua through Disaster Mitigation

As the outermost archipelagic region of Indonesia, Sabu Raijua Regency in East Nusa Tenggara faces significant risks such as drought, tidal waves, storms, and tsunamis. A strong commitment is essential to protect communities from these threats.

The Disaster Management Plan (RPB) 2025-2029 is designed to anticipate and mitigate potential risks. After a five-month process, this document was finalized at the end of 2024 through collaboration between the Sabu Raijua Regency Government, the Regional Disaster Management Agency, local communities, YKAN, and the Cerdas Antisipasi Risiko Bencana Indonesia team.

Sabu Raijua Regent Nikodemus Nithanael Rihi Heke emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration to ensure that disaster mitigation efforts address environmental concerns and communities' economic and social well-being. The RPB document outlines strategies, policies, and programs for the next five years aimed at minimizing disaster impacts.

With the increasing effects of climate change, Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA) has become YKAN's key approach. This strategy integrates coastal ecosystem management with disaster risk reduction.

During the RPB development process, coastal communities actively assessed climate risks and identified nature-based adaptation strategies. This participatory approach helps build disaster resilience while maintaining environmental balance.
