Nisa, whose full name is Khairunnisa Luthfiah, is a young person who participates in the Youth Movement for Green Development program. The program, initiated by Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN), is designed to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to manage environmental projects related to climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as communication strategies to spread the message of green development in East Kalimantan.

The movement has provided young people with training sessions since 2022. They gain insights into leadership, communication strategies, and an understanding of environmental issues. The anchor of this activity is the Green Growth Compact. The Green Growth Compact is a multi-stakeholder collaboration program in East Kalimantan to achieve Kaltim Green by implementing sustainable development that is environmentally friendly and improves people's welfare. The program aims to improve environmental conditions and natural resources and support a green economy.

Young people play a vital role in green development. They are the successors of sustainability. Fifty young people from East Kalimantan have been selected for assistance over the last three years and are expected to play a role in green development. Since 2022, these young people received leadership knowledge. Then training on making social campaigns and awareness (2024) is required. Finally, this year, coaching the campaign by applying the knowledge from the previous training is essential.

So, with the title Strengthening the Capacity of Youth Groups on Green Development Issues, Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change in East Kalimantan, YKAN trained 18 young people on February 22, 2025. They received material on green development campaigns and developments full day. The participants were then divided into three teams with the task of developing green development outreach and awareness with funding from YKAN.

Nisa was one of the participants. The biology student at Mulawarman University in Samarinda gained valuable experience. In particular, how to ground conservation issues to her generation.  “Many young people don't realize that small daily actions can have a big impact on the environment,” she said.  The material that Nisa can use to implement immediately is how to campaign through social media. She plans to create podcasts, content, and campaign organizing to contribute to environmental education projects.

Nisa and her group produced podcasts discussing themes related to environmental issues from the activity. The other group created a social campaign and campaign content on social media with the theme of green development. The young people who attend this training will acquire knowledge expecting to inspire collective action and strengthen the environmental movement among them.

This series of activities is a small effort to accelerate green development in Bumi Etam. YKAN remains committed to supporting initiatives like these and inviting more young people to join the green movement with other stakeholders.
