What is Kolarestari

Koralestari is Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara’s (YKAN) key initiative to support coral reef conservation across key marine areas in Indonesia. The program focuses on three priority sites – the Savu Sea, Berau, and Lingga – safeguarding around 4 million hectares of Marine Protected Areas, including 50,000 hectares of coral reef ecosystems. Two of these sites lie within the globally significant Coral Triangle, one of the most biodiverse marine regions on Earth. Through Koralestari, YKAN aims to safeguard these vital ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

With support from the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR), Koralestari is pioneering a new way to overcome the lack of innovative funding for coral reef conservation and restoration in Indonesia. YKAN’s solution is twofold:

  • Self-Sustaining Protected Areas : We're developing a sustainable funding model for marine protected areas, ensuring their long-term viability
  • Investing in the Blue Economy : We’re providing financial support for businesses that have a positive impact on coral reefs.

By combining these strategies, Koralestari is not only strengthening coral reef protection and restoration efforts, but also supporting a blue economy that actively reduces the threats these vital ecosystems face.

Koralestari Koralestari addresses the shortage of coral reef conservation funds through innovative schemes: blue carbon, reef insurance, BLUD, sustainable commodities, and community-based funding. This programme runs from 2024 to 2029 in the Sawu Sea, Berau, and Lingga.

Background

Indonesia sits at the heart of the Coral Triangle, home to 76% of the world’s coral species and 16% of its coral reefs. These vital ecosystems do more than support tourism, they also protect coastal communities from natural disasters and help absorb greenhouse gases. Yet these magnificent reefs face growing threats from human activity, including destructive fishing practices and climate change.

Koralestari is tackling the key drivers of coral reef degradation, including unsustainable fishing, aquaculture, coastal development, pollution, climate change, and invasive species. Its vision is to transform reef protection and restoration by creating sustainable  management models for marine protected areas and by advancing a blue economy that supports reef health.

  • Coral reef insurance

  • Financing reef-friendly enterprises

Program Goals

Kab. Lingga
Riau Archipelago
Lingga Regency has ±300 species of coral, ±1,000 reef fish, and ±300 invertebrates & megafauna. The focus of activities is on coral reef conservation and preservation.
Kab. Berau
East Kalimantan
Berau: mangrove restoration trial area with ±574 coral species & ±2,228 reef fish. Focus: sustainable shrimp, ecotourism, BLUD, blue carbon, & coral insurance.
Savu Sea National Park
East Nusa Tenggara
Savu Sea National Park, within the Coral Triangle, holds 76% of global coral species and 37% of reef fish, focusing on seaweed farming, ecotourism, & sustainable fisheries.

Implementation Areas

KORALESTARI TARGET LOCATIONS Koralestari focuses on three key sites spanning approximately 4 million hectares of Marine Protected Areas, including 50,000 hectares of coral reef habitat. All three locations are within the Coral Triangle, the global epicentre of marine biodiversity.
