Kios Konservasi: Balancing Economy and Nature in the Bird's Head Seascape

Economic growth must go hand in hand with environmental sustainability. This adage became the spirit of establishing Kiosk Konservasi, an initiative prioritizing community welfare and nature protection. Like the water with the cliff, the community and its environment have a close relationship and need each other.

On Saturday, February 8, 2025, Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) and partners officially launched Kios Konservasi in Sorong City, Southwest Papua. This initial launch marks a new step in conservation-based local economic empowerment.

The Kios Konservasi is a marketing center for the products of partner groups that have received assistance from YKAN. All goods and services sold at this kiosk come from businesses that apply the principles of responsible natural resource utilization.

The main objective of the Kios Konservasi is to strengthen the economy of local and indigenous communities while maintaining conservation values and local wisdom. As a commitment to sustainability, a portion of the profits from the Kiosk Konservasi is allocated to support conservation, empowerment, and capacity-building programs for local communities.

One of the principles of the Kios Konservasi is to promote the economic development of local and indigenous communities based on conservation values (protection, preservation, and utilization) and local wisdom. To solidify this commitment, a small portion of business profits is used to support conservation efforts.

More than just a trading facility, the Kios Konservasi can also become a forum and educational space for the community to develop conservation-based businesses. At this kiosk, the community can conduct business consultations and get technical guidance related to business development.

The Kios Konservasi buys and sells goods and services produced by partner groups from Werur Raya, Malaumkarta Raya, and Misool Island. Products sold at the Conservation Kiosk include coconut oil, fish crackers, handicrafts, and agricultural products such as sago, pineapple, peanuts, and others.

The launch of the Kios Konservasi is part of a larger effort to balance nature protection and community welfare. YKAN, together with stakeholders and partners, continues to encourage active community participation in community-based conservation efforts on the Bird's Head Peninsula - an area of high biodiversity that plays an important role in the global marine ecosystem.
