Research Finds a Way to Restore Mangroves and Shrimp Ponds Simultaneously

Indonesia has lost about a quarter of its mangrove cover since the 1980s. The main cause is the clearing of mangrove forests for shrimp pond expansion. Therefore, the starting point for mangrove restoration must also begin with these ponds.

However, the solution is complex because shrimp farming is both the primary livelihood for coastal communities and the highest-value export commodity in the fisheries sector.

SECURE (shrimp carbon aquaculture) Initiative to restore the mangrove ecosystem and enhance traditional fishpond production by reducing the cultivation area to 20% and utilizing 80% for mangrove ecosystem.

Therefore, two major questions must first be answered: Can shrimp farming coexist with mangrove restoration? And how can it be achieved?
