Indonesia is one of the world's largest shrimp producers. However, this title comes at a high price in terms of the environmental damage caused by this industry. We have lost a quarter of our mangrove forests, mostly due to land clearing for new ponds between 1980 and 2005.

The solution that has been offered for years is "silvofishery." This method involves planting mangroves in shrimp ponds to restore forests while supporting shrimp farming.
However, our latest research in Berau, East Kalimantan, shows results that differ from common assumptions. We combined in-depth field observations with satellite data to trace the complex relationship between mangroves and traditional shrimp ponds.
