Efforts to Preserve Wakatobi's Culture and History through Tourism

Wakatobi Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, is known as a world-class diving destination. In addition to its famous marine tourism, Wakatobi has rich cultural and historical potential. This tourism potential is offered by tourism awareness groups (Pokdarwis) from four villages in Wakatobi, namely the Tee La Ganda group from Balasuna Selatan Village, the Poassa Nuhada group from Kulati Village, the Tadu Sangia group from Dete Village, and the One Soea group from Kollo Soha Village. They tested innovative tour packages that combine natural beauty, history, and local culture.

From exploring the Puo Nu Futa cultural site in Balasuna Selatan Village to the Hekulu-Kulu traditional dance performance in Kollo Soha Village, tourists are invited to dive into the lives of local people. One of the most enjoyable experiences is the "live in" package, where tourists live with local communities, share their daily lives, and learn local wisdom directly from the source.

YKAN, through Aksi Inspiratif Warga untuk Perubahan (SIGAP) approach, has been working in Wakatobi with the Wakatobi National Park Agency (BTNW) to assist local communities engaged in tourism, from institutional strengthening, developing a code of ethics, procuring information boards and guide equipment, and developing tour packages.

For ecotourists in Wakatobi, tourism is not just an industry but a tool for conservation, ensuring their traditions remain alive while offering unique experiences for visitors. This initiative paves the way towards a future where tourism invites visitors and preserves the heritage for future generations.
